About the Friends

WHO WE ARE

Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt (FLPG) is an all-volunteer organization that is dedicated to the preservation, stewardship, and public appreciation of the Long Pond Greenbelt. A unique preserve featuring coastal plain ponds, freshwater swamps, wetlands, and woodlands, the Greenbelt stretches across the South Fork from Otter Pond in Sag Harbor to Sagaponack Pond in Sagaponack.

WHAT WE DO

  • Organize walks, talks, workshops, educational programs and field trips with local schools, monthly moonlight hikes, and a Sundays at Two series of presentations at the Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center.
  • Maintain a tree identification trail marking over 20 species of native trees and shrubs. Publish and distribute a tree i.d. guide
  • Sponsor an Annual Celebration Day in partnership with other local environmental and cultural organizations
  • Organize clean-ups and participate in the annual Great East End Cleanup held each spring in honor of Earth Day
  • Partner with The Nature Conservancy, Southampton Town, and Suffolk County to rehabilitate disturbed areas
  • Hold monthly meetings to plan work projects and educational programs.  
  • Target parcels for preservation and encourage their acquisition through established open space programs, including the Southampton Community Preservation Fund.
  • Restore the 42-acre Vineyard Field grassland in Bridgehampton.

Established in 1997, Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization.
