Native Bobwhite Quail Reintroduction 2013
July 9 · · Taken at Long Pond Greenbelt
On July 9th, we installed 112 2-day old bobwhite quail chicks into the Surrogator. The Surrogator provides heat, food and water to the quail chicks with minimal human contact. The goal is to reintroduce wild, native bobwhite quail into the Greenbelt. There is a 72% success rate for the Surrogator and there are many predators in the area, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that soon enough that classic “bobwhite” call will be regularly heard again in the Greenbelt.
